As we welcome the fall season and all things pumpkin and apple flavored, what better way to embrace the crisp cool nights and warm days than introducing White Rabbit Frozen Yogurt and their new fall flavors! Located in the heart of Elmwood Village across from Lexington Co-op, White Rabbit is locally owned and operated by Andy & Alisha Kandola. We sat down with Alisha and learned more about the business and it’s contributions to the Elmwood community.
Tell us a little about White Rabbit, what inspired you to open it?
Love for Desserts! My husband is that person that will eat his desserts before he eats his dinner. We both have a really big sweet tooth and its been like this for us since we were kids. Before we decide to go to a restaurant we often look at their desserts to make sure we’ll like them.
What are some of the rewards of being a frozen yogurt store owner?
All the froyo and toppings we want .. hehe. We get to be creative with our concept and so do our customers. That’s what our customers like. They can build whatever dessert they want. Whether it is putting Gummi bears on chocolate yogurt or Salted Caramel Syrup on brownie and vanilla frozen yogurt with some toasted almonds (yum! – my fav) Also the seasonal flavors!!! Pumpkin takes the cake. We get to feel the spirit of each season and holiday in our store. Not to mention the kids love it!
How long have you been at this location and what appealed to you about Elmwood Village?
We’ve been here for 2 and 1/2 years. Elmwood Village is the most unique spot in all of Buffalo. It is the creativity that surrounds the street from street music to art on walls, to all these festivals that this community organizes. This really feeds into a community feel which cannot be replicated anywhere else in all of Buffalo. Being a local business owner, you get to meet so many types of people, other business owners. My favorite part is just walking down the street and experiencing the summer fall, spring and winter each with its own experience.
Do you have anything special planned for the winter?
Our Holiday flavors and toppings! It starts with Pumpkin, then Grandma’s Apple Pie flavor to Thanksgiving flavors to Christmas!! Winter is also a big birthday party season for us, for all the winter birthday kids, we seem to be a popular spot to host parties. We offer fundraising opportunities as well that seem to go over really well with all the local schools and for charitable events. We recently began catering and that’s been exciting for corporate functions as well as weddings! We get lots of these catering parties booked in the winter season as frozen yogurt becomes a more popular alternative than ice cream during the cold months here in Buffalo.
What attracts customers to White Rabbit rather than it’s competitors?
Its our product, our customer service which takes priority over anything else. Our customers notice it and that’s the reason they keep coming back. We are always changing our flavors and toppings to bring in new interesting combinations. We are also very kid friendly with holiday themed coloring sheets we offer kids, and our well-known Sillybooth (an in store photobooth where customers can take pictures that later upload to facebook).
What’s the secret to your success as a local frozen yogurt business?
Andy and I LOVE what we do. We couldn’t imagine doing anything else, this is our passion. We consider this our first kid. We’ve poured a lot of love and hard work into this business. Also, working in the stores, our team makes it so much fun. We are a very close knit family here.
